The Quiet Maximalist
and the exercise that will help you rediscover yourself
Hi friends, I’ve taken a long and somewhat intentional Substack break while I tried to workshop what it is I want to add to the somewhat noisy space of the internet. Things can feel redundant, links can cause link-blindness, and everyone seems to morph into versions of the same person. I don’t want to just perpetuate that. Recently, I did a branding exercise with a company who is assisting with some graphics and branding for my Instagram and Substack and it really helped me gain clarity…
I thought about women whose sense of style I admire, but more the point, why? What is it is about an outfit that makes us feel something? Why can two people wear the same thing but give completely different looks?
I encourage you all to get curious. Even do a “branding exercise” on yourself. Make a mood board, pin outfits you love, screenshot interiors and celebrities that speak to you. Then lay it all out on the proverbial table and brainstorm. Tweak it, and make it your own.
This led me to the term “Quiet Maximalist”, and I had an “ah-ha” moment. While I so admire capsule wardrobes and black and white outfits… they left me personally feeling a bit lacking. So… I warmed things up, I tried color combos that were soothing and interesting. I layered in strong textures, prints, and elements that helped convey my personality.
Green dress| Beaded bag| Headscarf| Sunglasses| Blue Bag| Suede Pants| Leather Shirt| Striped Pants| Studded Sandals| Brown Sneakers| Striped Bag| Funky Sweater
It feels so good to put and name to something, to pinpoint a feeling and give shape to what words can’t fully express.
Let me know if you try this! I’m so excited to hear from you and what you come up with. And mostly- have fun with your clothing! There is only one you and you get to make the rules- don’t let me or anyone else tell you what’s “cool” or how you need to dress. x
